Automatic Traffic Control Data
Village Gateways create an attractive, highly visible display for signage, to give maximum impact to approaching drivers perfect for approaches to towns and villages. It can also be used for traffic calming purposes, by alerting motorists of a speed change and encouraging drivers to slow down.
Two surveys were carried out across 6 sites from Friday 18th Sept 2020 and Friday 18th March 2022 for a seven day period.
Headline Numbers.
We have seen a substantial -19% reduction (11,566) in the volume of traffic during the two periods.
The data shows a non-material difference of 1 mph on average speed increase during the March period. It is possible that this is due to lower volumes where traffic travels faster. The average speed recorded across all sites is 32.93mph.
First Speed Surveys carried out in September 2020, during Covid, when freight movements was down, Schools etc. struggling with movement.
National Statistics
Travel for the month is estimated to be 248.3 billion vehicle miles. The seasonally adjusted vehicle miles traveled for September 2020 is 247.2 billion miles, a -9.7% (-26.7 billion vehicle miles) decline from September 2019. So vehicle miles down on September 2019 in September 2020.
In March 2022 from our vehicle data, each location has less traffic that there was in Sept2020, so if you have a -19% reduction in vehicles going through Sambourne, and vehicle speeds have remained roughly the same, it could be said that the overall measures have discouraged 19% of traffic through the Village, maybe it hasn't effected vehicle speeds significantly but 19% reduction in vehicles is a significant factor.
The PDF files details total number of vehicles for all sites, number of vehicles recording a speed up to 30mph, between 30-40 mph, over 50mph and average number of vehicles per day at each speed.
On the basis of the data it would suggest that we do not have a significant speeding problem in Sambourne & Middletown.
